AOP firm Registration in Pakistan
When starting a business with partners, you have two main options: Partnership Firm (AOP) or Private Limited Company. Both have their own set of advantages and legal requirements. If you're considering a partnership, it's crucial to understand the registration process and legal obligations involved.
Partnership Firm (AOP) Registration Process
If you want to start a new business with partners or formalize an existing partnership, acquiring AOP registration is essential. Here's a step-by-step overview of the registration process:
Firm Registration
This step establishes the legal existence of your business entity.
NTN for Firm and Partners
After firm registration, all partners and the firm will receive National Tax Numbers (NTNs).
Opening a Partnership Account
With the firm and partners' NTNs, you can open a partnership account in the bank.
Legal Compliance
All partners will be bound to perform their duties as per the law, ensuring smooth and lawful business operations.

AOP Firm Registration Certificate
After completing the AOP Firm Registration process, the Registrar of Firms issues an AOP Registration Certificate as proof that your partnership business has been legally registered. The registration process generally includes the following steps:
Submit the completed application along with all required documents.
The Registrar reviews the application and schedules a verification date, if required.
All partners may be asked to appear before the Registrar with their original CNICs for identity verification.
Once the verification process is successfully completed, the application is processed for approval.
After approval, the AOP Registration Certificate is issued and can be collected from the relevant office or received according to the applicable procedure.
In some provinces, online registration facilities may also be available through the relevant government portals. Applicants can submit their applications, track the registration status, and receive updates throughout the registration process. Facilitation centers are also available in certain regions to assist applicants with document submission and registration services.
AOP Registration with FBR
After registering your AOP (Association of Persons), the next step is to obtain a National Tax Number (NTN) from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). This registration ensures your partnership business complies with Pakistan’s tax regulations and can legally conduct business activities.
Documents Required for AOP Registration with FBR
To complete the FBR registration process, you will generally need the following documents:
- Original Partnership Deed and AOP Registration Certificate.
- CNIC copies of all partners.
- Authorization letter on the firm’s letterhead, signed by all partners, authorizing one partner to complete the tax registration process.
- Registered mobile number linked to the authorized person’s CNIC.
- Active email address of the AOP.
- Proof of ownership or tenancy of the business premises.
- Bank account maintenance certificate issued in the name of the AOP.
- Recent paid utility bill of the business premises (usually not older than three months).
Once the required documents are verified, the FBR processes the application and issues the National Tax Number (NTN), allowing the AOP to fulfill its tax obligations and operate as a legally registered business.
Why Consider Other Options?
While a Partnership Firm (AOP) is a viable option for many, it might not always be the best choice depending on your business goals and structure. Private Limited Companies offer limited liability protection and other benefits that might be more suitable for certain types of businesses.
